Today I am going to do a broad sweep of three common but terrible medical conditions that affect so many people. It does not seem to matter your social status, or economic independence, or even the country you live in, but these illnesses loom in your future if you do not take charge and implement changes in your lifestyle and diet.
I'm talking about diabetes, hypertension and cancer.
In insulin-dependent diabetes, the pancreas no longer produces sufficient insulin. (Insulin is the hormone that allows sugar or glucose to be transported across the cell membrane so that it can be used by the cell as its major source of energy.) As a result, glucose levels rise in the blood after ingesting a meal. Elevated blood sugar levels can have an acidifying effect on the blood and the tissues throughout the body, since sugar is acidic.
Many treatments to reduce the stress on the pancreas include using insulin as a replacement therapy and taking nutritional supplements such as chromium, manganese, zinc, B vitamins, and digestive enzymes to facilitate glucose metabolism.
In insulin-dependent diabetes, pancreatic production of alkalinizing bicarbonate may also be impaired. In such cases, eating a less acidic, more alkaline diet that emphasizes vegetables, fruits such as papayas and melons, and whole grains (non gluten containing like wheat and rye) and legumes (beans and peas) is also highly recommended.
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a condition in which the blood pressure is elevated above 140/90 mm Hg. Current recommendation even have a lower cut off at 130/80. With this condition, the smooth muscle layer of the blood vessels constricts. There may also be an accumulation of plaque on the walls of the blood vessels.
As a result, the passageway through which the blood must flow narrows. The heart must then pump harder to circulate blood to the tissues. Approximately 60 percent of Americans over the age of sixty have high blood pressure. African Americans, people who are overweight, diabetics, or individuals who have a family history of high blood pressure are more likely to develop this condition.

Hypertension increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes as well as kidney and eye problems.
Various medications have proven effective in the treatment of high blood pressure. However, all medications have negative side effects such as loss of essential minerals, impotence, or elevation of the blood sugar level.
Many people are able to manage mild to moderate high blood pressure simply through lifestyle changes. These include weight loss, following a low-fat and low-salt diet, and stress reduction techniques such as biofeedback.
Alkalinizing the body can also reduce high blood pressure. For many years, the standard treatment was the use of potassium chloride.
However, recent studies suggest that the acidic chloride component of this compound may actually raise blood pressure.
In an animal study, Dr. Curtis Morris and his colleagues at the University of California, San Francisco, compared the effect of different salts on blood pressure. They tested table salt (sodium chloride), potassium chloride, and two non-chloride, alkaline forms of salts found in plants, potassium bicarbonate and potassium citrate.
The researchers found that potassium bicarbonate and potassium citrate actually lowered blood pressure and reduced the incidence of stroke. Their work also suggested that the chloride in table salt or combined with other minerals as a salt may trigger high blood pressure.
Many factors are known to increase the risk of cancer in susceptible individuals. These include genetic factors, familial predisposition, dietary factors, and exposure to toxic chemicals. Some studies have also suggested that an acidic cellular environment seems to be a predisposing factor for the development of certain cancers.
This connection was first discussed in a landmark paper by Otto Warburg, MD, who received two Nobel prizes for his work. His paper, entitled "On the Origin of Cancer Cells," was published in 1952 in the journal Science. Dr. Warburg was the first to propose that a deficiency of oxygen (a highly alkaline element) within the cells caused changes in the cellular metabolism leading to the development of cancer.
Dr. Warburg found that normal, healthy cells depend on an adequate supply of oxygen along with glucose (sugar) for the production of their energy.
When deprived of oxygen, cells revert to a more primitive, fermentative metabolism, which is typical of cancer cells as well as disease-causing bacteria and fungi.
The end product of fermentation is lactic acid, a substance that causes cells to have a lower pH. The amount of energy that can be produced by fermentation is eighteen times less than the amount that can be optimally produced by cells that are well oxygenated. The lack of oxygen thereby limits the amount of energy available to the cell to carry out normal metabolic functions.
Although Dr. Warburg's original work has been modified by subsequent -research, many studies have found that certain types of cancers can be treated effectively with oxygen therapies, because of their alkalinizing and tenor-destroying effects, as well as a less acidic, more alkaline diet.
Oxygen therapies are discussed in detail in my book on oxygen therapies. Many other factors thought to promote cancer also produce over acidity within the body. --These include free radicals, food allergies, aberrant electromagnetic energy, industrial chemicals, and other environmental toxins.
However, highly alkaline individuals who develop cancer should not be with alkalinizing agents since they can create severe imbalances in these individuals. Other types of cancer treatments, such as enzyme and detoxification therapies and many other treatment options, would be more appropriate and more beneficial, depending on the type of tumor.
