Ultraviolet Light: Nature's Disinfectant
Each time there is a flu pandemic, you may be wondering if you should ever venture out in public without a bottle of. hand sanitizer and disinfectant!
(A natural way to keep flu at bay is with natural herbs)
The problem is, chemical disinfectants have weaknesses. Many are inactivated by organic matter such as dirt, food, and bodily fluids. And, most must remain on a surface at least 10 minutes to kill the worst pathogens.
So is there any practical way to disinfect your computer keyboard or even an entire room in your home?
Fortunately, the answer is yes.
The most powerful and safe disinfectant in the world was "invented" by Mother Nature—ultraviolet (UV) light! UV light doesn't necessarily kill pathogens, but it can do enough damage to their DNA so that they die of their own accord without reproducing.
That's the key:
If pathogens can't reproduce, they can't make you sick. And, if used properly, UV radiation provides this benefit without any harm to humans. But UV light isn't enough.
To safely and effectively neutralize a pathogen requires a specific wavelength within the UV spectrum. Some devices provide that better than others, and you can't tell them apart by price. Here's what you need to know before you buy.
Infectious diseases spread through contact quickly!
1. "C" the difference.
The safest and most reliably effective ultraviolet wavelength is between 100-280 nanometers (nm), which is called UV-C or "germicidal UV." There are travel and portable type UV sanitizer you can take with you as well.
Longer UV light can damage skin and the lenses of the eye. And, even with UV-C devices, it's advisable to safeguard your eyes by looking away or, if using a whole-room UV emitter, leaving the room. In short, get concrete information about the wavelengths emitted before buying.
2. Integrity matters.
Make sure the company that sells the UV emitter has knowledgeable employees who actually answer the phone, return calls, stand behind the product, have stock replacement parts, and give good service.
3. Be realistic.
The infectious potential of computer mice and keyboards is horrific in health care facilities where personnel go straight from patients to shared computers to type progress notes.
Let there be LIGHT!
In a recent study, 136 bacterial cultures were taken from computers in various hospital wards before and after treatment with the "Nano" brand hand-held UV disinfection device.
The results showed no improvement in 72 percent of the samples after treatment. However, most of the keyboards were extremely germ-infested and grimy.
Grime protects pathogens from UV, and the grimy keyboards had heavy bacterial growth to begin with. The two computer keyboards that were regularly cleaned with disinfectant wipes and looked clean to begin with had only mild bacterial growth before treatment, and no growth after treatment with the Nano.
The point is that germicidal UV works, but it's not a substitute for sensible hygiene. Be sure to wash your hands often, and clean germ hotbeds in your house or office—like remote controls, keyboards, telephones, and door knobs—frequently. With that said, invisible contamination is where UV disinfection really shines. (Journal of Hospital Infection).
Here are some UV-C light emitters that I recommend:
► For disinfecting larger areas, try a-UV Disinfectant Light Scanner
► For smaller surfaces, I like the UV-C Light Wand Sanitizer
► For whole-room disinfection of an unoccupied room, try the Germ Guardian Pluggable UV-C Air Sanitizer ■
I hope you're enjoying the beauty of the season!
