Have you tried delicious and nutritious coconut water? Coconut water contains vitamins, minerals and is fat free and naturally sweet. But the greatest health benefit coconut water has to offer is its high content of potassium, as much as 670 mg per 11 ounce serving!
Potassium is an essential mineral and helps to regulate the water balance inside our cells as well as nerve conduction. It is necessary for the health of our heart, kidneys, bones and other organs. If your potassium level is low, you are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure, heart disease, strokes, muscle cramps, digestive problems, osteoporosis, arthritis, infertility and even cancer.
We need at least 4700 mg of potassium each day from our diet, but many of us fall short on our intake. You may also be potassium deficient if you have Crohn’s disease, take medications like diuretics, engage in intense athletic workouts or have a high stress and demanding lifestyle.
Luckily, there are many foods that are great natural sources of potassium. These foods should be included abundantly in your diet and include bananas, almonds, peanuts, leafy green vegetables, avocados, citrus fruits and potatoes. Other great food sources include cantaloupe, kiwi, tomato sauce, beans, yogurt, halibut, salmon and, of course, coconut water! Love, Dr. Susan
